May Bumps!
With May Bumps finished QCBC has recorded highlights including: Blades (up 6) for M4. M1 holding 8th on the river, W1 moving up to 9th on the river. M1: Rowed over 4 times, to stay 8th on the river. A long week, but some great rows; from nearly being bumped to coming so very close to bumping in front. Selected race reports at http://www.theclubhut.com/events/318/report |

Lent Bumps Success!
After 5 days of racing, Lent Bumps has come to a close. Overall QCBC achieved some impressive results, with W1 leading the way, going up 4 and earning blades (now 5th on the river)- bumping Clare, Caius, Jesus and Christ's. M1 bumped twice, Jesus on the first. And after spending 3 days chasing a gritty Pembroke boat they bumped on the final day. (Also now 5th on the river). M2 held station, after being bumped on the first day, and bumping back up 2 days later, they lie 7th amongst M2's. W2 were unfortunate to receive spoons (-7), but should retain their place on the bumps chart. M3 made two quick bumps (30s!), but were unfortunate to have crews bump out on the other days they raced. M4 got on! After making one bump, and getting bumped once, they held station. A great week (and dinner) by all, (some) full reports available here www.theclubhut.com/events, and full results available from www.firstandthird.org/frames/results/show.phtml |

Head to Head
With the dust barely setted on Fairbairns QCBC were back out competing in City RC's Head to Head Race. Head to Head certainly is a day of '2's.... Strangely, we choose to row a 2k course, 2 times (once in either direction), furthermore, Queens' entered 2 boats... Women's VIII finished 2nd, and Men's VIII finished 2nd! For their first leg, W1 found themselves in the middle of a 3 boat sandwich, impressively catching Pembroke Women, and holding off a men's boat! After such an adrenaline fuelled first leg (2s off quickest women's time), the second leg couldn't quite match up and unfortunately they lost out to a phenomenal Downing W1 time overall. The Men recovered from a poor row downstream, to put together a smooth and aggressive return leg, eventually placing them just 3s behind a well-trained Caius boat. Senior Fairbairn's
With Fairbairn's delayed to the start of term, rather than the typical Michaelmas finale, racing was bound to be a little different (and warmer) than originally planned. With a 2 day training camp, and some 'holiday' training under our belts, Queens' put out a 1st Women's VIII and split the men's VIII into 2 IV's. The women put in a great performance to finish 3rd! Their best result in recent years, and beating the likes of Pembroke (Head of Lents/Mays), FaT, and Jesus. The men's 1st IV topped the IV's division, finished a full 30s clear of 2nd placed Robinson, and the 2nd IV were 3rd college boat (with a bent skeg...) Results are a great start to term, which will culminate with Lent bumps, where the Women (1st boat) start at 9th position on the river, and Men (1st boat) at 7th.

Training Camp
Queens' finished a successful training camp, with several ex-novice boats getting to grips with a rushing river and gushing rain...The women's 1st VIII and 2 mens IV's re-prepared for a postponed Fairbairn's, with some stunning conditions on the Cam: www.theclubhut.com/teams/380/photos/1489 Best of luck to all, and all bodes well for a speedy and fun term. |

Queens' dominate Autumn Head
Both Queens' Men and Woman got off to a great start to the season, the Women competing as a IV, were rewarded with a second place finish after a smooth enjoyable row! The Men's VIII retained the competition they won last year, this time by defeating FaT and Jesus by 28s.

Henley Royal Regatta 2010
This year M1 went to Henley qualifiers after a very successful year racing on the Cam, however we still felt we had something to prove after things not going to plan at May Bumps. With Helge working in Germany after term finished, Jacob stepped up to the Challenge of adapting to the crews rhythm after his year out rowing for the MIT lightweight squad. Max Richly also having swapped sides since bumps, the first few outings in preparation had started a little shakily. By the time we left for Henley, however, the boat was once again flowing in a smooth rhythm, and sparing against FAT's Henley VIII showed we had good pace. |

Queens' W1 WIN at Henley
Today saw a new category added to the Henley Boat Races - the FIRST Intercollegiate Varsity race. Each University chose a Lents VIII to represent them alongside the other Boat Races. Oxford chose Worcester W1 and Balliol M1. Cambridge chose QUEENS' W1 and FaT M1. The event was raced over 1.5km. Representing the Cambridge Colleges, Queens' W1 raced against Worcester at 1.15pm today. Having been given only a week to prepare, the girls entered the race unsure of what to expect. After a relatively even start, with Worcester possibly opening up a slight lead, the girls settled well and gradually started moving up on Oxford. Coming to the 1km mark, Queens' had at least a half length lead, and continued to move all the way to the finish, as Oxford's initial pace began to expire. They crossed the line first, beating their Oxford contenders by 1 1/2 lengths. A huge CONGRATULATIONS to W1, it is a fantastic win both for them and for the club. |

Henley Boat Races - Sunday 28th March
The women's first boat will be racing Worcester College Oxford at the Henley Boat Races this year. The race is 1500m side-by-side. It is a huge honour for Queens' W1 to be racing at Henley. QCBC's Kate Richards, will be coxing the CUWBC Lightweights and we wish her and her crew the best of luck! It would be great to see as much support there as possible, so grab your Queens' stash and join the crowd at Henley-on-Thames for a great day out. |

Queens' M1 make history with Fairbairns WIN
Queens' M1 made history yesterday by WINNING the Senior Mens VIIIs division in Fairbairns. The race, which officially started in 1929, has been won by Queens' crews only three times. Queens' NM1 won in 1993, our W1 won in 1994 and our NM2 won in 2003 (beating all the novice 1st VIIIs). However, the Senior Mens VIIIs event, the longest running of all the divisions, has never been won by Queens'. They recorded a time of 14.02, 8 seconds clear of second place FaT and third place Downing - the fastest time since 2001. They also replicated their Winter Head win by beating the University Lightweight II crew. Queens' W1 came in a strong 7th, even after a last minute crew change due to illness. W2 were 4th and the M2 IV came in 5th. The novices performed well in the races, with NM2 standing out with a 3rd place finish. Looking forward to Lents, with the team continuing to strengthen and grow. |

Queens M1 WIN Winter Head 2009
Queens' M1 continued their recent string of successes by winning the Cambridge Winter Head race today, in a time of 8.25s. This was 12 seconds clear of their closest rivals Downing, as well as beating Senior VIIIs from Trinity, Jesus and LMBC. Queens' also beat Imperial College Londons M1, and one of the two University Lightweight crews. Queens' W1 also put in a strong row, finishing 6th out of the Women's Senior VIIIs. The final big race of the Michaelmas calender lies in Fairbairns on the 4th December, in which Queens' hope to continue their performances seen so far. For the full race reports please visit here. |

University IVs 2009 - Double Men's Win
Both Queens' M1 and M2 crews took home the win in their respective divisions in this mulit day university event. Queens' M1 battled it out with Cauis, Magdelene and Kings to reach the final with Downing. After a very strong race, the result ended with a DEAD HEAT joint VICTORY. A fantastic result, but to double it, Queens' M2 crew also won division 2 outright, beating Downing M2 in the final by a few seconds. Check out here for the times and full races timetable.

Joke of the eek2
As I had no jokes put forward to me this week (kc320), here is one of my personal favourites.
Why can captain kirk hear so well? Because he has 3 ears - a left ear, a right ear, and a final frontier! I await contributions from the rest of the club. Good luck to everybody competing in the ergo comp tomorrow! |

The first is submitted by a well-known QCBC celebrity: How does the man in the moon cut his hair? Eclipse it! I look forward to your submissions. x |

Head of the River Race
This was the highlight of the term and the perfect way to begin our Mays campaign. We went into the race with a crew barely changed from the Lent VIII, and managed to beat two of the crews who bumped us quite considerably. We finished as the fourth Cambridge college only beaten by FaT, Fitz and LMBC and beating Jesus, Downing and Pembroke amongst others.
The row to the start was promising after two dire training outings in the days leading up to the race. The crew had calm and collected confidence; there was little pressure on us and off the start we strode into a relaxed rhythm at 32. The first eight minutes of the race was the best rowing I’ve been involved in at Queens’ and was boosted by overtaking a weak University of Nottingham crew early on. We then became locked in a battle with University College London II (UCL), pushing to overtake them whilst another crew attempted to overtake us. This flustered us momentarily and the rowing became rather scrappy and clean blade-work suffered. However we regained some confidence and overtook UCL coming into the final 2000m. The last kilometre saw us regain clean rowing and a strong rhythm, and an effective push for the finish at Putney was executed. Ian’s excellent lines contributed massively to the result as did his effective calls. His Tideway experience shone through in this race and we were able to respond quickly and efficiently. This was an exceptional performance in very good conditions. It is important that we do not rest on our laurels. The race was far from perfect and there is much to improve on. However it was, for most of us, a first whiff of success. This will give us drive to surpass this quality next term so that we are fully prepared to take on the boats around us and come away with some bumps. |

Lent Bumps Roundup
There were some excellent performances throughout
the club that bode well for the Mays campaign and Henley in the summer.
On the men's side M1 rowed with guts and determination, the highlight being a pulsating row over being hotly pursued by a handy Christ's crew. The lads really pulled their hearts out on the Thursday during a performance which was executed to plan. Charlie Adams, in particular, at stroke had a fantastic race to keep the rate at 36 for the whole course under extreme pressure. Under the excellent leadership of Max Beverton, the preparation was spot on and the experience gained invaluable. Bring on the Mays. W1 yet again proved why the women of Queens' Boat Club are one of the most successful crews on the Cam, in both men's and women's rowing, in recent seasons. Three dominant bumps after the unlucky row over of the first day were an illustration of this fact. Their crew spirit fostered by Cath Wheeler and the other senior members of the crew meant that the former novices in the boat improved rapidly. With the return of triallists and the competition for places that comes with that, the first eight are in an extremely strong position to push forward again. Well done. Well done to M2 for finishing level over the 4 days. The lads proved that they were consistently quicker than Selwyn M2 in each race, and bumped a University crew (CCAT M1!!). W2 showed great levels of improvement in difficult circumstances in the women's third division. A crew of limited experience really went for it in the bumps. Their reward was improvement race on race. A special mention to their captain Amy Shepherd. Her competitive attitude drove the crew forwards. A fantastic effort over eight bumping races saw M3 go up one over the four days. The experience of stern pair (Ed Kwong and David Neave) in front of some raw power meant that the lads had the advantage of a dynamite start. Overall I'm extremely proud of the club as a whole. With holiday training and our annual easter training camp planned to take place in Shrewsbury, every oarsman and woman will be in great shape come week 1 May Term. Keep up the good work. |
