The Lent Bumps - Tuesday 2009


2nd Women's Lent VIII - Bumped Clare Hall

Although we were confident we could bump Clare Hall, everyone's nerves were on edge and no one knew what to expect once the gun went off. It was a bit of a rocky row, but we pulled it together eventually and we got our first bump at Grassy corner! Great job girls! Lisa xx

2nd Mens Lent VIII - Rowed Over, Bumped Churchill II

On Tuesday morning we knew nothing, only one member of the boat had rowed bumps before and we hadn't any analysis of the crews in front and behind. I think we were all secretly a little bit afraid of CCAT because of this lack of knowledge. However from the moment we got into the boat our concentration and effort was exemplary.

CCAT seemed to blast it off te start and coming up to grassy corner things seemed a bit hairy as they were about half a length or less away. Then three things happened: we stepped up our game, making every stroke count, CCAT tired and one of their crew caught a crab, then CCAT got bumped. This left us clear to row over comfortably in what was a scary and gruelling race, but one in which we proved our mental resilience.

We knew nothing about Churchill m2 either, but were relatively optimistic as we saw no reason why we couldn't bump them. Our start was a bit frantic and altogether the row was a little scrappy, this probably had a lot to do with the fact that we had never before rowed in such rough water. However we ground them down gradually and by grassy were a quarter of a length off. At this point I crabbed (apologies) but we recovered well and had bumped Churchill within a minute or two after. All in all this was a good race in which we never gave up and Churchill were never going to escape.
