The Lent Bumps - Friday 2009

1st Women's Lent VIII - Bumped Pembroke

Great work from Jem subbing for her first every bumps race! And a credit to the women's squad at the moment that we are able to do that so successfully. Ok start (after escaping the potentially murderous swan on the way up!), once we got close it was still strong but lost timing so took a long time to close the last bit. But 3 from 3... not a bad place to be! Mills xx

2nd Women's Lent VIII - Bumped Newnham II

Although our start was slightly rocky, we were all determined for a quick bump today. And we succeeded by bumping Newnham II at first post corner!!! Smiles all around - great job girls! Lisa x

1st Mens Lent VIII - Bumped Christ's 1 into Ditton

It may be sounding a little tiresome by now, but the simple fact is that today was the third example of another perfectly executed race. We found a great rhythm off the start and although blade-work suffered momentarily we didn't lose any speed or rhythm. We gained quickly and consistently on Christs from the very beginning, getting our first whistle at the end of First Post Reach, this was progressed to three as we mowed them down in The Plough.

Down plough reach, Christs obviously tried to push us away, as we oscillated from having overlap to at most 5 feet away. However, their pushes were just prolonging the inevitable. We stayed calm, relaxed and focused and waited for them to fail, and thats exactly what happened.

We bumped Christs just before Ditton. Job done. Ed

P.S. Special mention must go to Adam who made some great changes today!!

P.P.S. Big respect to Churchill for holding-off Peterhouse!

A more relaxed crew, who were quickly learning from the experiences of the past two days were more than ready to take on anything in front of them. Rumours were being circulated that Christ's had a fast start, but we knew that as long as we waited for the moment, we were the faster crew.

Off the start, we had a very clean set of strokes, but suffered a little with the dirty water under the motorway bridge. Settling into a very nice rhythm, we got our first whistle coming into first post, and our second during a really nice line on grassy. With a huge cheer of support from a fantastic Queens' contingent, we gained on them all the way down Plough reach. They made a last push, which got them some impression on Magdelene but by this time they were too tired. 3/4 of the way down Plough reach we heard the third whistle, and executed our final push exactly to plan, bumping them on the way into Ditton.

Carnage was narrowly avoided when clearing, as we had front row seats to a heated race between two evenly matched crews of Peterhouse chasing down Churchill who managed to hold them off to the end.

An exciting days racing, a perfectly executed race plan, and a buzz for what will come tomorrow, brilliantly rowed by all. N

2nd Mens Lent VIII - Bumped Emmanuel II

A slightly unsat race yet we solidly bumped Emmanual II and drew away from FAT III. The boat had more power but less suspension than usual. If we can combine power and a level boat we will blow away the competition.

After a great start (our best ever) we cut the distance to Emma down to around a length and chased them down. We hit the side at one point but recovered and powered through to bump them around First Post Corner. The marshalling seemed very dodgy as we bumped them twice and had no clear instructions. It was a short race but we were all puffing at the end.

One more bump and we'll have blades. Let's keep the boat sat (concentration), power down and come through victorious!
