The Lent Bumps - Wednesday 2010

1st Men's Lent VIII - OVERBUMP on Fitz M1

Starting 13th, with Kings - Magdalene - Fitzwilliam - Emma ahead of us.

After an interesting start to the race, we failed to make any proper ground on King's, being kicked around in the dirty water. They had clearly trained hard since our previous encounter at Bedford, and got a well executed (and well deserved) bump on Magdalene. The two crews then decided to clear to opposing sides of the river, forcing some emergency coxing from Jon as he plunged his arm into the Cam to handbrake us around First Post.

Then we started rowing like we knew we could. Clear water ahead, we switched on our race plan and started moving in for the overbump. All of the crews had concertina'd (spell check me someone) in front of us, meaning there was somewhere around 4+ lengths between us and Fitz coming out of Grassy. As they went round Ditton, we called our first big push. With a fantastic response from the crew, we sat the boat up and probably closed the gap to near 2 lengths as we came round Ditton.

We were reeling them in fast, and I think they must have panicked, as our next big push was called at 1 3/4 lengths, leading straight into an unexpected kill call! We hit them near the railings on the reach, a fantastic finish to day 1 of racing.

Chasing Emma tomorrow - looking forward to it.
