| 1st Men's Lent VIII - BUMPED Clare - BLADES | |
|
The day some of us in the boat had been waiting for for 3 years - the opportunity for Lent Bump Blades. The week had gone from good to better, with an overbump on the first day setting up our campaign well. We knew we were quicker than everyone in front of us, but as had been shown on the first day, crews don't like to be bumped and will give everything to get away. Emma and Tit Hall had both held us at just under station down FP reach, but we quickly wound them in coming into FP corner. On the final day of racing, we had Clare in front of us. They had started in 4th, and were on for spoons. With some emergency overnight rigging, and a last minute morning outing from them, we wondered what they were going to chuck at us. In the end, whatever it was, it wasn't going to be better than the hail, with the heaven's opening about 30 seconds before the final cannon! However, the crew stayed focussed, and after a good start we held them at 1 length for about 25 strokes. Unfortunately most of the speakers in the boat where full of water, so at bow pair, Craig and I couldn't hear a thing! However, we had discussed the race plan, and I knew that any second after we had 2 whistles I was going to feel a surge from the crew. This duly came, and as I responded one stroke late I soon felt another huge push, which I interpreted as our BOOM call and gave it everything for the next few strokes. We hit Clare pretty quickly, on the way into FP corner. A special mention must go to our stroke, Peter Mildon, who had rowed for the previous two days on a damaged rib. Unfortunately he is now out of training for a few weeks, so we are unable to race FaT/Downing for the Oxford Colleges race. We are looking forward to (finally) coming up against them next term! Tab article. Varsity article. It has been another great term for the squad, however, looking at the videos there are still many big improvements that need to be made if we wish to continue our run of success into May term. |

"I didn't give up smoking just to bump Darwin", Nathan's words of inspiration. This was our day. No excuses, we knew we were never going to get bumped, we could catch what was in front, all up to us. Our attitude was once again spot on. Confidence and desire right from the boathouse. Our practice starts were our best, the one outside the Plough got some good cheers. The actual start was definitely our best, controlled and really powerful. We got our first whistle under the motorway bridge, and just moved up on them from there. Our bank party were awesome, the whistles did not make our rowing any worse. We just kept pushing. The cox box cut out again coming up to first post by the time the "tank it" call came, so perhaps not everybody responded at the same time. The whistles also stopped momentarily, as Dr Walker managed to fall off his bike (we obviously had no idea). A slight doubt crept into me at this point, but the bank party kept yelling "overlap!" Maybe two more "tank it" calls came from Emily, I don't really remember, but she was screaming so we all heard. I myself gave a "come on boys!" roar. The bump came just coming round first post corner. Whether Pembroke II were tiring or panicked I don't know, but we didn't care. All our term's training built up to those few minutes, and it felt good. That's what bumps is about. Considering we had 6 freshers in the boat, 5 of them ex-novices, to become one of the fastest M2 boats on the river is no mean feat. If Darwin weren't so awful, we could have all had a few more days exciting racing, but I'm so glad we finished on such a high. |
